Hazardous Material Response Unit
Services Provided
This unit is a joint effort of the Bergen County Police Department, Bergen County Department of Health Services, and the Office of Emergency Management. It represents the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection in Bergen County and will provide technical assistance to municipal officials at the scenes of hazardous materials releases and spills. This unit possess the technical knowledge, skills, and equipment to contain most hazardous chemical releases and spills.
Some of the common types of incidents for which this unit can provide assistance include:
Fuel Spills Flammable liquid spills Chemical releases or spills Chemical transportation accidents Abandoned or unknown chemicals Chemicals in rivers or streams Leaking underground storage tanks Who to Call

What to Do
Isolate the spill or leak - keep bystanders and emergency workers at a safe distance. Stay up-wind of fumes.
